अक्सर लोग आगरा के लाल किले को भ्रमित होकर दिल्ली के लाल किले से तुलना कर बैठते हैं, लेकिन मुगलों द्वारा स्थापित लाल किले को वास्तव में मुगल लाल हवेली कहकर बुलाते थे। आगरा का लाल किला मुगल स्थापत्य की बेहतरीन कलाओं में से एक आदर्श है। यदि इतिहास को देखते हुए भारत को मेहलों अथवा किलों का देश कहा दिया है, तो इसमें कोई दो राय नहीं होगी। कहा जाता है कि भारत पर आक्रमण here करने के पश्चात मुगलों ने आगरा के लाल किले को अपना आवास बनाया था। कुछ साक्ष्यों के अनुसार यह कहा जाता है कि बाबर से लेकर उनके वंशज औरंगजेब तक सभी मुगल सम्राट यहां पर निवास कर चुके हैं।
इस मस्जिद का निर्माण शाहजहाँ के द्वारा करवाया गया था जो की शाहजहाँ का निजी मंदिर था यह मोती मस्जिद के पास ही बना हुआ है.
